We’ve been talking about mini splits for quite some time now. For the most part, they’re cost effective, energy efficient, and a good solution for many. With that being said, there are of course ways you can maximize their efficiency. Whether you picked a single zone or a multi zone system (and if you don’t know the difference, check out our last post), we at Green Ductors are here to give you some tips for maximum efficiency. Remember, the most efficient mini split is the one you look after and optimize.
Ways to Maximize the Efficiency of Your Mini Split
Let’s make a list, shall we:
- Prioritize Cleaning and Maintenance
I mean how could we not make this the first point? By now, our readers should know that this is one of the key points to having any system last. Filters can be easily removed and should be cleaned at least once a month, but if it’s allergy season, we would even advise every 2 weeks. Aside from cleaning filters, we also advise wiping down the vents and unit exteriors. Plus, we can’t forget about professional maintenance. At minimum, a yearly checkup and deep clean by professionals (like Green Ductors) is a good idea.

- Don’t be Wishy Washy
Mini splits like consistency. When you turn your system on again off again it puts extra strain on the compressor, and in turn the system uses more energy. So to answer the question of “do mini splits turn off when the temperature is reached”? If everything is set up correctly, yes, they should. Hence, in this instance it’s best to leave the unit on and use the “auto” setting so the system self regulates cycles and avoids the strain of turning on again off again.
- Use a Smart Controller
Things like smart mini split thermostats exist, and they help you stay comfortable and regulate your unit from afar. For example, heading out for the day? No problem, you can turn the temperature up a notch, and vice versa for when you’re on your way home. This is also convenient if you have a multi zone system as you can schedule temperatures according to your needs. So, how much power does a mini split use? Well, this obviously depends on your model, but typically anywhere between 500 and 1500 watts. Hence by setting up a smart controller, you’re able to better control and utilize unit efficiency.
- Keep the Units Clear
Do not block the indoor or outdoor units with things like furniture, curtains, shrubs, and so forth. It’s important for the units to remain unobstructed for optimal performance. Remove things like snow or leaves from the outdoor unit if needed.

- Double Check Your Insulation
No heating and cooling system will work well if there’s air leaking from your home. You should double check your doors and windows and make sure they’re properly sealed, no air should be passing. Another place to look is your attic and make sure it’s properly insulated for optimal efficiency. Last but not least, close off unused parts of the home to reduce energy demand.
- Use Ceiling Fans to Your Advantage
In our “Keep Your NY & NJ Home Cool Without AC” post, we touched on ceiling fan rotation. This is also pertinent in this situation. It’s important for air to move in the right direction to help facilitate heating or cooling. If you’re wanting to cool, the fan should be moving counterclockwise in order to push the cool air down. When it comes to heating, the opposite is true, movement should be clockwise to help distribute the warm air.
To Sum Things Up
Mini splits are a great investment, and if you’re wondering “are mini splits efficient” we certainly think so. Plus, they tend to be more cost effective than a ducted system, especially in the initial stages. By keeping the above tips in mind you’re able to maximize the unit’s efficiency and prolong the equipment’s life.
