Our last post discussed the Reasons Behind High Energy Bills in the Summer. There you can find several tips for ways to lower your electric bill and keep your home cooler. We want you to be able to stay as cool as possible, so today we’re expanding our list of tips.
Stay Chill: 7 Strategies for Home Cooling
- Check Your Ceiling Fan Rotation
Did you know that you could change the direction of airflow on your ceiling fan? In the summer, your fan should be going counterclockwise. This direction pushes cool air down and makes a nice breeze. In the winter, the opposite is needed. So if you (or the previous owners, renters, or whoever really) didn’t know about this, you could be heating your space without even realizing it. The switch is typically on the fan body, have a look.

- Choose Natural Fabrics
Breathable fabrics are where it’s at. Textiles like cotton and linen are ideal for hot summer months. Swap out your wardrobe pieces for loose, breathable options. Do the same for your home. Change out heavy curtains and blankets for their lighter summer counterparts.
- Utilize Plants
Plants are great, both indoors and out. They can release water vapors through evapotranspiration, which can cool the air. Place a few inside for their benefits (they also filter air, so it’s a win win). Outdoor plants are also great as they can absorb some heat before it reaches the house. If possible, do a bit of landscaping and add in shrubs and plant trees in your yard. They will significantly help lower temperatures.
- Upgrade your window situation
Curtains are a no brainer, but have you thought about reflective window coverings? If you still want to see the light of day, things like films can deflect the sun but allow natural light to pass. Another option would be to outfit the outdoor part of the window with awnings or exterior shares. If on a budget and looks aren’t a concern, you can also hang a damp sheet outside your window. It helps cool the air as it passes. Rewet the sheet as it dries as needed.
- Strategically Close Doors and Windows
Doors and windows play a big role in staying cool. During the toasty parts of the day, close all points of entry. You are trying to keep the cool air where needed as best you can. This can also go for indoor doors. If you like to keep the laundry or garage doors open, close them. Focus on creating a comfortable temperature in the rooms you spend the most time in. Once the temperature outside drops, you can pop open a few windows to ventilate as needed.
- Avoid Cooking Indoors
A lot of heat can be generated from an oven or stove. To avoid heating your home even more, opt for lighter meals that don’t require cooking. Or, you can always fire up the grill outside.
- Get an Extra Fan
If needed, get an extra fan to help circulate air even more. As a tip, you can also make a DIY conditioner to boost the fans’ powers. Simply put a bowl of ice in front of the fan, and viola — the air will now be cold.

Conclusion: Beat the Heat Without Breaking a Sweat
We hope these tips will come in handy and you’re no longer left wondering how to lower the power bill. Staying cool in the hot summer months doesn’t have to break the bank.
