Cases on Home Performance and Indoor Air Quality Improvements

case #1
Carynn
Carynn's child had asthma and she mentioned that during night hours asthma attacks were more frequent. The first request she made was a regular cleaning service. Let's see how the story ended.
Action 1
When inspecting a unit in the attic, suspected bacterial growth was discovered, that looks apparently like mold. Usually it growths on cooling coils. The temperature in the attic was higher than normal. During the day cold air passes through the attic and condensates. When there is another source of pollution in the room, for example dust, then bacterial grows appears inside the HVAC unit, particularly in a cooling coils section.

We cleaned the ducts, all the internal elements of the system: blower motor, cooling coils, also an outside condenser and suggested installing UV lamps to burn out spores. Carynn agreed and we installed UV lamps.

She noticed changes and contacted us again, requesting to make additional improvements if possible.
We used MERV 12 filters. There was no filter on one of the returns. Technicians set the filter to maintain the clean indoor air circulation. Since then only filtered air entered the system.

Carynn also wanted to get an air monitoring devise and agreed to set up a FOOBOT. We checked the house for the gas level. Our technicians, perform both duct and vent cleaning to remove allergy triggers, such as dust particles or dust mites. It was a new experience for Green Ductors to monitor the gas indoor level.

On the second floor, there were two bedrooms - of Carynn and her son. The problem was that there were not enough of fresh air, the system just circulated the same air pushing it again and again. We noticed a high concentration of gases inside both bedrooms. When we got the FOOBOT results, both CO2 and VOC levels were 5 times higher than the norm. The highest figures on the scale were at night, when the closed bedroom doors and the amount of CO2 exhaled by a person increased the gas concentration level. Since the child had asthma, and Carynn just saw the gas concentration data, she decided to install a local ERV system in the child's bedroom to increase air circulation and not harm the air conditioning of his room.

After setting the ERV system, the CO2 and VOC levels got back to norm. Since then asthmatic cough happens less and in general, Carynn noted significant improvement in the well-being of her and the child.

Caron became our regular client. Four times a year we perform services at her house. Technicians replacing filters and cleaning the ERV system. We also installed ERV system in Caron's father house, who suffered from a respiratory disease. He used to be a heavy smoker before and had serious lung problems. We installed two ERV system - in the bedroom and in the office, so that in the rooms where he spent most of the time there was always a clean air.
Results
After cleaning ducts, setting FOOBOT and the local ERV, the CO2 and VOC levels got back to normal. The heavy asthmatic cough was gone and she noted a significant improvement in the well-being of her and child.

Mrs. Smith
Mrs. Smith got an allergy and her daughter contacted us to get rid of the source of the allergens. She installed an air quality monitor - AWAIR. It checks the level of toxins and chemicals, VOC, CO2, humidity, and temperature level, and can be synchronized with Alexa (home control device).
Action 1
She contacted Green Ductors for a duct cleaning service. Technicians found out that some time ago there was a leak under the carpet and mold appeared there. While cleaning the ducts, they also found that the whole HVAC unit was contaminated with mold. The logical solution in this situation would be a complete replacement of the unit.
Action 2
Since the unit was in the attic, mold got into the ventilation. We suggested installing a new unit and setting a smart NEST thermostat to connect via IFTTT to their's AWAIR monitor so that the system will turn on automatically if the pollution level grows.
Action 3
For a good air exchange in the house, we connected a central ERV system to the duct system. Returns take the used air, and the supply system gets fresh air continuously. We also connected the exhaust to the ERV system from both bathrooms, to mechanically remove the moisture.
Results:
After our technicians installed the new HVAC system, connected to the ERV system, due to proper ventilation the pollution problem was solved - toxins and allergens levels decreased, the source of mold was removed. Indoor air quality came back to normal.

Anita
Anita bought a new house. And moved in with a small child. The house she bought was under construction for a long time. She was worried about the health of the child and wanted to find out if the ventilation system was functioning normally and to clean it off an accumulated dust.
Action 1
During the inspection, GD technicians found that there was only one return for the whole house. It was set in the hall of the second floor, but not in any of the bedrooms. Which is why an air exchange per room was minimal in both bedrooms. During the day hallway return pulled air from the bedrooms, but at night, with the doors closed, air could not circulate properly but inflated the room with already used air. The pressure in the room increased. We led an additional duct into each of the bedrooms and set a return system.

Technicians insulated booths, laid ducts to the return plenum, removed dust, cleaned dryer vents, replaced one plastic dryer with Innovative dryer flex. Also removed constructional dust and set up a healthy air exchange per room.
