Radon. Wonder if you might be at risk?
Radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless gas.

The dangers of radon

Health authorities consider Rd to be hazardous to health due to its radioactivity. The EPA classifies radon as a carcinogen, which means Rd-poisoning can lead to cancer. Exposure to Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer for non-smokers and the second main cause for smokers.

Rd - the largest natural source of human exposure to ionizing radiation in most countries. In the general population most exposure occurs indoors, especially in small buildings such as houses (UNSCEAR 2000), although there are some groups for whom occupational exposure presents a greater risk.

Where is radon commonly found?

Radon is a natural radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium and regularly found in magmatic soils. Typical exposure to radon scenario is through inhalation and ingestion.

All houses / basements have radon?

Any type of a house - a new or an old one, well-sealed or not, with or without basement - can have a radon problem. Families in the US are most likely to get Rd-exposure at
home. Cause "at home" is where we spend about 90% of a lifetime.

Nearly one out of every 15 homes in the United States is estimated to have an elevated radon level (4 pCi / L or more).

The gas rises, seeping through the soil into the air. And enters the house through cracks and other holes in the foundation or through the well water. It can "settle" in the house for many years.

How to get rid of radon?

Removal and Prevention

EPA recommends Radon preventing methods as soil suction, which blocks radon from entering the house, drawing it from below and venting through a pipe to the air above the house where Radon gets immediately diluted.

If there's any information that you can supply the construction with it will help to choose a more efficient system approach for Rd removal. Many contractors use chemical smoke to locate the source and direction of air movement in the basement. The airflow sources point likely radon routes.

Another type of diagnostic test is a soil communication test.
A contractor uses a vacuum cleaner and chemical smoke to learn how easily air moves under the foundation from one hole to another.

Does a dehumidifier or a fan reduce radon?

Radon levels rise and fall inside a house, so it is quite difficult to gauge how serious the issue is on your own. Use local service for the test. After radon been tested by professionals and found. There are plenty of options available to reduce its level or cut the source.
A single dehumidifier won't help much with radon.
If a house has serious Rd issues, a radon mitigation system has to be installed, which is costly or an alternative solution - like a radon mitigation fan, if your Rd level is slightly higher than the norm and fan was recommended by the technician.
